Magi’s Grandson – Chapter 81+notes

Kaelpie: Now I am aware someone called either Riven or DreamPotato released their version.
I am also aware it was only one third of the chapter, so here’s ALL of it.

Looks like the entire chapter was too much for Xion alone so he has help now in the form of SlyFox and Sakuya. So that should make things go faster.

Also, the notes are still here. Rejoice. Or go here if you don’t like them.

And the music recommendation is still here as well. This time it’s God Is An Astronaut – All is Violent, All is Bright (Post-Rock)

The Earlshyde Grand Prix

We have not been able to kill all the devils.

Furthermore a group had managed to escape and was heading towards Earlshyde.

But since Earlshyde’s army is coming from that direction, there’s a possibility they’ll engage with them.

If the devils manage to break through, there will be nothing stopping them from reaching the Kingdom.

At this rate Earlshyde will end up becoming a battlefield!

“Gus! I’m gonna open a Gate to Earlshyde!”(Shin)

“No wait! It’s not necessary to go to Earlshyde! It might be possible for you to catch up to them by using your floating magic! We’ll follow right behind you! We won’t let them get away!”(August)

Gus rejects my suggestion of waiting in Earlshyde, claiming that it won’t be necessary, and wants to capture them ahead of time.

Certainly, we should be able to catch up…

“What if we are unable to capture them?”(Shin)

“In that case each country shall declare a state of emergency! Damn it! For them to be pulling this kind of crap when it’s almost over!”(August) (Kaelpie: How rude of them to fight till the bitter end. Their desperate struggle to survive has mildly inconvenienced you. They deserve a stern talking to for that.)

Gus’ tone becomes more violent as he talks.

Since Earlshyde might become a target, he’s pretty worked up.

I too, want to rush in as fast as I can, but I can’t just go and leave the Allied Forces unguarded.

“We will chase after the runaway devils! I ask everyone else to keep heading towards the Imperial Capital while subjugating the nearby demons! We will be counting on you!”(August)

After confirming that Gus has used his magic to issue instructions to the ally forces I quickly cast floating magic on all Ultimate Magicians

Since I’m the only one who can use Floating magic.

If everyone could use it we could split up to search, but I still don’t know how to teach it to them yet as I did with other magic, so I have been putting it off as it could backfire.

At the very least all the members joined the search, so as to avoid overlooking anything by increasing the number of “eyes”.

“Which way should we go?!”(August)

“Hey! Which way?!”(Shin)

We used search magic in the direction that the reconnaissance unit has pointed out but, the devils are currently outside its range and could not be located.

In order to know the exact direction the demons headed, Gus asks the renaissance unit where the devils went. (Kaelpie: They’ll tell him in latin.)

It was very surprising for the soldiers of the other countries who really respect Gus to see him speaking in such an enraged tone.

I can understand his impatience. Since it’s his own country that’s currently under immediate threat.

“Ugh, Yes! It’s in that direction!”(Michelangelo, not the ninja turtle)

“Understood! Let’s go! Full speed ahead!”(August)

Like that we set out in pursuit, to what could be the fight to end it all.

“Everyone, use your magic to search for enemies! Absolutely make sure not to overlook anything!”(August)

[Got it!!](Ultimate Magicians)

Now that it has come to this I think I should have given Sieg a WCD, even if it was just the open channel one. (kp: Wireless Communication Device. WCD for brevity)

That way I could have gotten in touch right away and alerted him about the situation.

But if we only give a special magic tool to Earlshyde, people will say that they’re affiliated with us or that Earlshyde is monopolizing us, so I hesitated handing the WCD over to them.

Now that has clearly come back to bite me.

Even if political relationships aren’t all that great, I should have ignored that and handed it over.

Considering that no Ultimate Magicians went with the Earlsyhde army, I should have closed my eyes on this degree of special treatment and given the WCD.

Now all the Earlshyde army can do is pray that they don’t come face to face with the devils.

Currently as we chase after the devils while searching for them we can’t afford to go at full speed since we could risk overlooking something.

We want to find them quickly.

Because of that we can’t rush it.

While dealing with this frustrating dilemma we’re flying in the direction we assume the devils went.

Even though the devils aren’t really that strong, there were around fifty of them.

It would take some time to eradicate them completely.

How much further away are they? Can we catch up to them?

Are they really ahead to begin with? Is this the right direction?

Everyone was concentrating on searching for the enemies, trying not to overlook the slightest hint, all the while holding in the anxiety of the country being attacked.

At this time, if even one person had gone to Earlshyde using Gate, we probably would have covered more ground. (Kaelpie: Why do I hear the Benny Hill theme in the distance.)

*****

The Earlshyde army knew that even if Shin and the others’ subjugation of the Devils was successful, they are in a situation in which they couldn’t afford to miss the final battle.

If Earlshyde missed such a historical moment, they would be ostracized by the rest of the world.

Since they couldn’t accept it if it came down to that kind of situation, they changed their route originally heading towards the Former Imperial Capital, to the village where the devils had gathered.

“Isn’t the former capital the place where Devils normally gather?”(Siegfried)

“How many more times are you going to complain about that?” (Christina)

“Even though we would have been the first to arrive if it were the Former Imperial Capital.”(Siegfreid)

Siegfried continues to complain.

Christina received the same order, and was holding the same feelings of anxiety inside, but Siegfried was getting on her nerves.

“There, there. Please calm down you two.”(Miranda)

At this time, Miranda who was with them was trying soothe the quarreling pair.

During the previous battle, having devised the new combat move “Jump Stab”, Miranda had garnered enough contribution with the defeat of the disaster-class, to be allowed to move with the two leaders. (Kaelpie: Considering this world’s track record, the “Jump Stab” can be classified as a scientific breakthrough.)

Christina had an awkward feeling after being admonished by Miranda, who, despite being a student and younger than her had a more adult-like response to the situation, and started lecturing Siegfried.

“Well look at that. Doesn’t Miranda seem more like an adult? Please, think of your position…”(Christina)

“Shh!”(Siegfried)

Siegfried stopped Christina, who was about to begin her lecture.

“Wha- What is it? I still haven’t finished talking…”(Christina)

“Be quiet for a moment! Magic Division! Do you feel that!?”(Siegfried)

Christina thought that Siegfried was just trying to get away from the lecture, but his expression was serious… more than that, he looked as though he sensed something dangerous.

And it was the same for all the members of the Magic Division.

“Wh… What is this?”(Siegfried)

“A demon? It’s too big to be a disaster class…”(Siegfried)

Apparently, they could feel something magical approaching.

There was a magic presence strong enough to be felt before being seen coming from a distance.

It seems to be a demon, but its powers far surpass those of a disaster class.

The knights, who can’t use Search Magic to identify enemies, can only look puzzled at the words of the mages.

“Siegfried! Did you feel that!?”(Rupert)

“Chief… This is, quite terrible isn’t it?”(Siegfried)

“Haa, this is beyond bad. After all, this is…”(Rupert)

Rupert, the leader of the Magic Division, who rushed to Siegfried’s side, remembered the feeling of such magical power.

“… isn’t this the power of the devils?”(Ruper)

“De- Devils!?”(Siegfried)

The people around him who heard those words received a shock.

In a short while the surprised voices spread through the whole Earlshyde army.

“But! So many reactions!?”(Siegfried)

“I’m afraid that’s the case…”(Rupert)

Rupert prepared for the worst case scenario and gave an answer.

“… They… Failed?”(Rupert)

“No way! No one could get past Shin!”(Siegfried)

Siegfried, knowing how out of the ordinary and prepared Shin is, couldn’t imagine how he would ever let the devils get away.

“It is true that Walford is out of the ordinary. But things having actually come to this. Something unexpected could have happened.”(Rupert)

It’s hard to believe, but the situation is actually happening.

Three devils are heading straight towards them.

No one wanted to believe it, but it cannot be denied…

“Alright everyone listen up! An emergency has happened! A group of devils have manage to escape Walford’s grasp, and they are coming our way!”(Rupert)

In order for his voice to reach the whole army Rupert used magic to amplify the sound of his voice.

“But! We have to make it impossible for them to get through here! Because…”(Rupert)

Rupert paused for a moment, looking in the direction from which they came.

That direction was…..

“Past this spot is the Earlshyde Kingdom!”(Rupert)

When the Earlshyde Army heard this, they had a look of despair, but soon that was replaced by a heroic and determined one.

“Defend this spot to last man! Like your life depends on it!!”(Leonidas)

[OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!]

Beyond here, is Earlshyde. Our home, our families would be attacked by the Devils

So as to show that such a thing will never happen, the entire Earlshyde Army roared.

And then, at last, the devils had come close enough to be in the army’s field of vision.

“Everyone! Battle position! They’re coming!” (Rupert)

And when the devils were within range…

“Fire!!” (Rupert)

Every member of the Earlshyde Army’s Magical Division fired their magic and directed it toward the devils.

The devils, heading straight for the Earlshyde Army at high speed, couldn’t take the attack head on and veered off course to avoid it.

The Magic Division’s attack landed on the spot where devils had been moments ago, turning over a great amount of soil. (Kaelpie: According to this line they were running instead of flying. Which means there’s a strong possibility they were Naruto running.)

The Magic Division’s combined attack on one spot was powerful enough to change the landscape.

Seeing such a scene, the devils were surprised and stopped moving forward.

And then…

“Wha-!? They fled!?”(Rupert)

After seeing the attack, it was expected that they considered it dangerous.

They stopped trying to head towards the Earlshyde Army, changed course and instead went around to avoid the Earlshyde Army.

“……This, this is bad! The Capital lies ahead in the direction they escaped! After them!”(Rupert)

“It’s impossible, chief! There’s no way we’ll catch up to them like that! More importantly, if we don’t contact our homeland to alert them!”(Siegfried)

It’s not really surprising to hear Rupert, the one who used that voice-amplifying magic, instructing them to give chase, but the speed difference with the devils is too great.

It’s not realistic to try to catch up to devils moving at high speed with an Army of a few thousand soldiers. (Kaelpie: If only they watched Naruto instead of One Piece, this wouldn’t have been a problem.)

Instead, Siegfried said to contact Earlshyde with the communication device, in order to be prepared for an assault.

“That, that’s right. Dominic!”(Rupert)

“I know! Someone take the fastest horse and go to the communicator at full speed! Got it! At full speed!”(Dominic)

Dominic, leader of the Knights, asks to get in touch with Earlshyde with the fastest horse.

Rupert looked with spite in the direction the devils ran away.

“We’re going back to Earlshyde. Even if we don’t make it in time, we can’t give up.”(Dominic)

Dominic ordered Rupert to give instructions to detect the magic of the devils afterwards, and to prepare to return to Earlshyde, but…

“……No, we’re going to continue to move forward”(Rupert)

“What? Rupert, what are you saying…”(Dominic)

“Even if we try to return we won’t catch up with them so there’s no meaning. On the other hand… Walford and his team have Gate. They will definitely protect Earlshyde.”(Rupert) (Kaelpie: Yeah, About that…)

Rather than going after devils they can’t catch up to, Rupert tells Dominic to trust in Shin and the others by advancing, progressing with the subjugation of devils and meeting up with the Allied Forces.

After thinking for a while Dominic came to a decision.

“Indeed… with our army’s marching speed, it’s not realistic to catch up with the devils. It is our role to believe in them and move forward…” (Dominic)

“Damn! So we still have to rely on those kids till the end! What on earth are we doing!?” (Rupert)

They can’t stop the demons. Even if they go after them they won’t catch up.

Rupert ground his teeth in frustration.

*****

By using floating magic we are able to chase after the devils while flying at high speed, but I can’t sense them at all.

Did they really pass through here?

Is there a chance they changed routes along the way?

Or is it possible that, right from the beginning, this wasn’t the right direction?

Such doubts keep crossing my mind.

“Gus! Are you sure this is the right way?”(Shin)

“How should I know that!! For now, we must keep going at full speed!”(August)

As expected Gus has lost his cool.

This is bad… If I’m being honest, I have confidence in their magic powers, but I’m clueless when it comes to military operation.

To begin with, tactics and strategy is not something you learn at the magic academy.

That’s something you learn after joining the army.

Even in my previous life, I was quite unfamiliar with the knowledge in that area. (Someone in the tl team: Finally something he doesn’t know!!!!) (Someone else in the tl team: agreed!!)

In the Ultimate Magician’s case, it was Gus who decided in which direction to take action, the thought of having made a mistake in judgment might be the reason for his loss of composure.

“Gus! Calm down for now! If it comes to it, we can use Gate to go to Earlshyde immediately!  It’s not too late!”(Shin)

“I know! For now we’re gonna keep chasing after the devils!”(August)

We thought that we were going straight towards the direction they were supposed to have fled to.

It seems neither Gus nor myself have kept our cool. And with that we failed to realize what this feeling of discomfort was.

The fact that we didn’t encounter the Earlshyde Army.

The regret for failing to catch all the devils.

And also the rising impatience not having found them yet.

Earlshyde is everyone’s hometown, everything important to them is there…

That feeling of dread because Earlshyde might be attacked by the devils.

It gripped our hearts, and caused us to lose our ability to make calm assessments.

If we had been calm, we would have noticed that we haven’t encountered the Earlshyde army that was supposed to be heading in this direction.

And then, we would have searched for the Earlshyde Army to verify if they had encountered the devils.

But like I said before, there is still Gate as our last resort so it’s still not too late.

We who had lost our composure… failed to realize this.

*****

“Still… Shin and the others aren’t showing up.”(Christina)

“Who knows, maybe they directly went back to Earlshyde with Gate.”(Siegfried)

Earlshyde Army, who had encountered the devils who fled, were continuing their march while believing in Shin and the others.

The devils passed quite a while ago, since Shin and the others still haven’t appeared at all, Siegfried quickly started to worry.

“If, by misfortune, Shin and the others didn’t realize that devils escaped…” (Dominic)

“…Oi! Dominic! Send another messenger!” (Rupert)

“Understood!” (Dominic)

If Shin and the others didn’t realize that devils had escaped, Earlshyde won’t have any way to defend itself.

They quickly sent another messenger towards the communicator to inform Earlshyde that the devils are heading their way.

Siegfried and the others tried to shake their concerns with the thought that, if no one noticed the devils had escaped, the Ultimate Magician’s would go straight to Earlshyde using Gate.

Shin and the others having already departed, left the Allied Forces unaware that the devils were being pursued.

*****

We couldn’t find the devils’ trail at all.

It’s possible they changed directions along the way.

However, only Earlshyde lies in the direction the devils had fled to.

We decided to drop the search for the devils and go straight to Earlshyde’s capital to finish things with one swift strike by moving to the castle using Gate.

When we arrived at the castle, people were swarming around like a beehive.

“Wha- What is it? What happened?”(Shin)

Why is there so much buzzing around in the castle?

“Ah! Your Highness! Walford!” (My entire purpose in life in exposition)

“Hey! What happened! What is this uproar all about?!”(August)

Gus presses the soldier who answered for further explanation.

The soldier answered in surprise to that.

“I got in touch just a moment ago with the Army dispatched to the Devil Territory! They faced the devils but they ran away and are heading here!”

“Wha-!What!”(August)

The Earlshyde Army encountered the devils!?

Now that I think about it, we didn’t encounter the Earlshyde Army!?

Which means that… we had been tracking them in the wrong direction. (Kaelpie: Should’ve turned left at Albuquerque.)

Damn it! No wonder we didn’t find them!

Moreover, once the Earlshyde Army had left the country, they would have marched towards the former Imperial Capital, then had to turn around and head to the city were the devils had gathered.

In other words, the Earlshyde army wasn’t marching in a straight line towards the city.

There was no way we could have run into them while we were traveling in a straight line towards the Kingdom’s capital!

“Goddamnit!!  Why is everything taking such a drastic turn when it was almost over!!”(August)

Gus is regretting his own error in judgment, but right now is just not the time for that.

“Hey! What has happened with the reserve troops!?”(August) (Someone in the tl team. did they ever have them? these people are now pulling things out of their asses for sure) (Kaelpie: What, Don’t you keep some reserve troops with you at all times? I never leave the house without mine.)

The entirety of the Kingdom’s army is not participating in this operation.

One portion of it stayed in the Kingdom and was preparing in case of an emergency. (Someone in the tl team: Sounds feasible but let’s face it, this people are idiots, they don’t think that far ahead ¬¬)

Gus was checking the current state of said troops.

“With the recent contact, we calculated the location those devils would most likely appear at based on the direction they’re taking. Since we were already stationed in the area where they’re predicted to appear, we’ve already established communication. I believe that everything is in place for the ambush attack!”(Mr. Exposition)

“Which part of the border, precisely!?”(August)

“The plain that served as the battlefield for the previous war with the Empire!”(My life’s purpose is complete now)

“The plain near the border…”(August)

This… is bad…

“Has anyone among you ever gone there…”(Shin)

I know about that place.

In the past it used to be a place where we often fought against the Empire. We learned that in class. (Kaelpie: Remember to recycle your battlefields. Save the environment.)

There isn’t anything special about that place.

That’s why it was chosen as a battlefield, because there is nothing there…

“Ugh! I haven’t!”(August)

“Umm… Me neither…”(Sicily)

Gus and Sicily answer in a somewhat apologetic way.

Everyone else also shakes their heads.

As I thought!

There doesn’t seem to be anyone who would purposely go to somewhere there’s nothing.

“It’s impossible to use Gate! We’re going by flight again, guys!”(Shin)

[OOH!]

Since no one has ever been there before we gave up on using Gate to reach the plains, so once again we are gonna use floating magic (to reach) to fly towards  the plains.

We must hurry, the battle between the reserve troops and the devils can happen any moment now.

Dealing with the devils was originally meant to be our responsibility.

Even though their fighting power has risen, it’s still a heavy burden to be placed onto the soldiers.

After cornering them at last, there’s no way I’ll let anyone become a sacrifice!

With that in mind, we aimed for the plains near the border.

Then, the moment the plains came into sight, we could confirm that the devils’ ominous magic was closing in on the reserve troops. (Kaelpie: The Benny Hill theme is getting louder…)

“The devils’ magic!”(Shin)

“Damn it! They’ve already made contact with the reserves!”(August)

“Almost theeeere!!”(Shin)

“Make it in tiiime!!”(August)

I put all my concentration into tracking the devils’ magic.

Because of that, I wasn’t able to notice that other presence.

When thinking that we wouldn’t make it in time….

I suddenly saw a huge column of blazing fire rising up, engulfing the devils’ magic.

*****

After receiving communication from the Royal Capital, a heavy atmosphere could be felt hanging over the Reserve troops.

They were told the devils had slipped past both Shin and the Army, and are currently heading towards Earlshyde.

Shin is chasing after the devils, and if he manages to catch up to them then it will be the end. It would also work out if he went back to Earlshyde, received the report and came here with reinforcements.

However, even if they are coming from Earlshyde, they would be arriving too late.

Some were also worried that maybe Shin and the others in fact didn’t realize that they let some devils escape.

And if they are still chasing after them, it wouldn’t be expected that they would show up here.

The reserve troops are ready to put their lives on the line, but their mixed expectations and anxieties are creating a heavy atmosphere around them.

“His Highness and the others still aren’t here…” (the joke is coming)

“No, no-no. I tell you they’re still chasing after them!” (Wait for it)

“It’d be nice if His Highness and the others made it in time though…” (Almost there)

“If I knew it would come to this, I would have held the ceremony beforehand.” (Next few lines)

“You…You… you don’t mean…” (Just about here)

“…Ah. I… wanted to hold a ceremony after this was over…” (Teeny bit more)

“Idio-, you bastard!  You! such a thing… what ridiculous thing did you do!?”(red herring joke)

The other soldiers were so surprised he had risen such a perfect death flag that they burst in angry shouts.

Although it looks like they are fooling around, they themselves are very serious.

“This is it, we are going to die in the next battle…”(Mr. Meta) (Kaelpie: I fucking hope you do.)

“I’m sorry man…”(plz laugh)

To say it once more, they’re serious.

It would be nice if the Ultimate Magicians are able to catch up, if they don’t make it on time the death of everyone in the reserves is guaranteed.

It would be normal for anyone to try, even if just a little, to avoid thinking about death related matters.

Such a heavy atmosphere hangs over the Earlshyde reserve troops.

The magicians among them finally alerted that the time has come.

“Fucking where!!! Th… They’re heeere! It’s the devils!”(Fuck you it was funny)

While being frightened by the devils’ ominous magical power, they raise their voices using magic to alert everyone.

Because they were so frightened, they couldn’t perceive Shin and the others’ magic.

Suddenly something approached Earlshyde.

They didn’t make it on time. And at that moment all soldiers started giving up, thinking that their lives are about to end:

“Hoho. They’re here, huh.”(Definitively not Merlin)

“What, that’s it? Is that really a devil, I wonder? Isn’t this magical power too small?”(Definitively not Melinda)

Their prayers had been answered.

P.S. Notes:

Soldier A,B or C: This is it, we are going to die in the next battle… (Kaelpie: I should fucking hope so.) (Kaelpie: Real talk, having a character be self aware of being a cliche DOES NOT excuse you for using that cliche, especially not if he just outright says what his cliche is. If anything it just makes it really fucking annoying. Even if he doesn’t die in the end

Staff Banter:

Even in my previous life, I was quite unfamiliar with the knowledge in that area. (Someone in the tl team: Finally something he doesn’t know!!!!) (Someone else in the tl team: agreed!!) (Kaelpie: I mean, “nuke everything” doesn’t exactly require  tactical genius to carry out.)

I think he’s talking about his so called allies from Dahm, not the devils.

  2. Thanks for the chapter, lol good to see kaelpie’s comments are in this, not sure why you bothered with making a noteless version of each chapter, I can’t even imagine reading this series without them

  3. Thanks, i couldn’t even understand most of what was written in that other translation.. didn’t even realize they cut it down…

Anyway What a bunch of morons, just split in 3 teams.
1 with troops just in case..
    2 goes to earshylde…
    3 chases…

You don’t need to be a damn tactician to know it’s best course of action, especially if communication is potential issue this way they can communicate with all 3 sides using wireless and be prepared for worst case scenarios.. why the hell do they need whole damn group if they’re chasing after few runaways ?

  4. And this is why i was waiting Xion’s Tranlastion. I have been waiting for months, and it wasn’t in vain. This chapter actually gave me chills and then i thought: “He couldn’t have written the worst case scenario, rught? …Right? Oh god he fucking did! Yoshioka knows what he’s doing!”

Cliché part aside, really nice chapter. Finally an MC that doesn’t know about Military Strategy, that’s a relief…

    Thnks for the translations guys

  5. Wew why not just separate the 10 members into groups 3 person per group while shin will do solo and assign tyem to chase or wait on earlshyd or some remain with tge troops for a countermeasure just in case something happen.. they are too strong and still stickk together just to fight a left over devil 😦
